Farmers’ Market to host celebration for Dr. Ethilda “Tillie” Johnson
On Saturday, July 4, 2015, the Farmers’ Market will be hosting a celebration in honour of Dr. Ethilda Johnson’s last day as a Market vendor.

Dr. Johnson will be closing her stall at the Farmers’ Market after 43 years as a Market vendor. The celebration will take place between 12 pm to 2 pm and will include musicians and a cake for Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson was born in Jamaica in 1928 and arrived in Hamilton 40 years later. She established Tilly’s Tropical Delights, a small market stall on Concession Street selling Caribbean food before setting up shop in the Hamilton Farmers’ Market in 1972.

Dr. Johnson’s stall attracted many people from Hamilton and other Golden Horseshoe cities, introducing Market visitors to Caribbean cuisine. In addition to her food, Dr. Johnson has been a mentor and advocate for Caribbean youth, and established the Tillie Johnson Scholarship Foundation in 1997. In addition, Dr. Johnson was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from McMaster University in 2002.
