Winnie Seamstress
Hello! I am Winnie! I am able to sew all sorts of fabric, from fine fancy materials, to knits, to heavier cloth; and can do alterations and tailoring for customers.
I started to sew by hand when I was 8 years old. It came very natural to me. I enjoyed making doll clothes for my friends and I. At the age of 12 my aunt bought me my first Singa sewing machine. The first thing I made was a square black and white skirt. I wore that skirt every Saturday to school.
In 1995 I started making dresses for kids and pregnant ladies. From there I started to get orders from venders in the market to sell my dresses. In 2000 the fighting started in Congo and I lost everything I had. We moved to Uganda as refugees with our 13 children. In 2005 I started to sew again in Uganda baby sheets and blankets to supply many shops. Some days I made up to 100 sheets at a time. My sewing helped me feed my family.
In 2008 the Catholic Church started the process to sponsor us to come to Canada. We arrived in Smithers, BC Canada in 2013. When we arrived to Smithers people gave to me 2 sewing machines, 3 serger machines, lots of fabric, thread and other essentials to start sewing again. I felt so happy because this was the start of my new life. I started selling clothes at the Bulkley Valley Farmers Market in 2014 and my business has slowly grown. With the earnings from the market I have been able to purchase more industrial machines which allows me to expand my business and reach new goals. I am now able to sew all sorts of fabric, from fine fancy materials, to knits, to heavier cloth; and can do alterations and tailoring for customers.
