Orange Shirt Day began as in 2013 as an indigenous led commemoration of the residential school experience, witnessing and honouring the healing journey of the Survivors and their families (The Orange Shirt Society).

Since September 30, 2021, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation coincides with Orange Shirt Day and recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind and the survivors of these institutions.
